A Rustic Escape at Lavender Waves Farm: The Field, the Suite, and the Fire Pit

The Lavender Suite's stove glowing on a quiet evening

People come to Lavender Waves Farm for different reasons — a wedding, an open day in the field, a weekend in the suite — but the thing they describe afterward is usually the same: it's quiet out here. We're a 14-acre working lavender farm in Wakefield, Rhode Island, the field planted in 68 circular rows of fourteen lavender varieties. This post is our own rundown of what a rustic escape here actually looks like. No packages, no programs — just the farm as it is.

The stay: the Farm Suite

The Farm Suite is the only place to stay on the farm — a luxuriously rustic suite on the second floor with views over the lavender field. We run it through Airbnb, where it's a Superhost stay rated 4.99 out of 5 from more than 370 reviews. Because it's our only rental, suite guests have access to the whole farm during their stay, including personal use of our custom-built gazebo out in the field. If you want the room-by-room walk-through, it's in our post Staying at the Farm and on The Farm Suite page.

Evenings by the fire pit

Right next to the suite is our fire pit — a big one, built for sitting around. It's there for suite guests to use, and on a clear night it's the best seat on the farm: the field in front of you, the animals settled in for the night, and the kind of quiet you don't get closer to town. Plenty of our guests end up out there after dinner, and more than a few have told us it was their favorite part of the stay.

Honey from the farm's own hives — when we have it

There are beehives here on the farm, kept by our beekeeper, Jason Reinalda. When he harvests, the honey comes to us, and we sell it in the farm shop — the bees work the same farm our guests walk through, lavender included. The honest catch: we don't always have it. The harvest is what it is, and when the jars are gone, they're gone until the next one. So if you see lavender honey on the shop shelf during a visit, that's the time to grab it.

Days in the field

If you're visiting rather than staying, the farm opens to the public on select seasonal open days — we're not open on a regular schedule, so check the site for dates before you come. Peak bloom runs from late June through early August. Our 14 lavender varieties don't all bloom at the same time, so the field flowers in waves across the season, and a lighter second bloom usually persists until about October. On open days you can walk the rows, cut your own lavender in season, stop in the shop, and meet the animals — five alpacas, two llamas, our three camels, the two livestock guardian dogs, Leonard the barn cat, and a flock of chickens, ducks, geese, and peacocks.

Bringing a group?

Weddings, reunions, and company gatherings happen here all season, and every one of them is booked through our events side and planned as its own event — we don't sell packaged retreats or preset group itineraries. If you're picturing your group out here, start with the Events page and reach out — that's how every event at the farm begins.

A few tips from us

  1. Wear comfortable shoes: The farm is a farm — natural ground, sometimes uneven.
  2. Bring a camera, then put it away for a bit: The field photographs beautifully, and it smells even better than it looks.
  3. Visit during bloom if you can: Late June through early August is the field at its best.
  4. Stop in the shop: Lavender goods from what grows here — and when we have it, you'll find the honey there too.

That's the escape, as honestly as we can put it: a working farm, a quiet suite over the field, a fire pit after dark, and honey when the bees provide it. If it sounds like your kind of trip, see The Farm Suite — our only rental on the farm, booked through Airbnb — or come see the place on an open day first.
